So, I hope you all had happy holidays! Including the upcoming New Year, of course.
My Christmas was excellent, and it made me think of the gift-giving part of it a lot. My parents told me that when I was much younger, Christmas was all about the first present. You open something and you see it and it's "so cool!" and you don't even notice anything else.
Once I understood that there was more than one present, it became a game of each present. I wanted the next one, and the next one, and the next.
Now that I'm older, it's so much calmer. And I love it this way. The past 2 years or so, my parents have had to wake me and my siblings up because we weren't the jumpy, overexcited, internal alarm set for 5:00 Christmas morning anymore. It's nice now. We take our time, open presents, hang out with friends for Christmas dinner, maybe watch a movie.
When you're little, Christmas is a new toy in pretty paper. A little older and it's lots of toys in all this paper you get to tear apart, which is a game in and of itself. Once you're old enough to start worrying about getting things for other people, trying to get everything ready, it's family time.
So that's what I did. I spent time with my family. And, yes, the presents are still exciting, of course, but I'm often just as excited to see what people think of my gifts to them as to see my own gifts.
Enjoy your holidays, and enjoy your family!
